The Power of the Boomerang Effect 02/21/2012
Life returns to us what we generally give out. It's the basic law of sowing and reaping or the expression, "What goes around comes around." Emerson said it well: "If you want a friend, be a friend." There's just no getting around the human tendency to return to others that which we get from them. That's why repaying good for evil is so hard. It's why justice is so hard to wait for. Learning from Experience 02/06/2012
Watch as John Maxwell dives into the well-worn proverb, "Experience is the best teacher," and why it isn't really true.
Maxwell says that for experience to teach us, we have to evaluate the experience. 5 Lessons Football Teaches us about Life 02/04/2012
I played football from 7th grade through four years of Division 3 football at Wheaton College. I like to tell audiences when I speak that I demonstrated Saturday after Saturday why I was not headed to the NFL. But even though I was not a standout player (how much can you really stand out as an offensive lineman?) I took away five key lessons that have continued to have an impact in my life and career. 1. You need a coach As much as athletes think it's all about them, a coach is important not only to preparing a team for each game, but also managing the team on game day. You need someone to put the right players on the field, know when to call time outs, know when to "go for it" on fourth down. Working, not Waiting 02/02/2012
We often wait, instead of work. We've come up with plenty of excuses: time, money, fear. The list goes on. We should be working on our goals. We wait. We should be working on our vision. We wait. We should be working on our skills. We wait. We should be working on our plans. We wait. 5 Keys to a Winner's Mindset 02/01/2012
Do you have a winner's mindset? Are you prepared to win, willing to win, trying to win in the game of life? Believe it or not, many people dislike the emphasis on winning, even though there are winners and losers every day in the marketplace. Competition is part of life, and it's often the prime motivator for us to do our best, to succeed. Just as the Patriots and the Giants need a winner's mindset for the Superbowl, we also could use that same mindset at work and in our personal lives. Here are five keys to developing a winning mindset. Profit from an Ownership Mentality 01/27/2012
Do you have a worker mentality or an ownership mentality at your job? If you don't own your own business you may wonder why you'd even consider such a question. Having an ownership mentality, thinking like an owner, fundamentally changes the way you approach your work. You can't do your job the same ever again. Consider the differences between an "owner" and a "worker." The worker focuses on the task. The owner focuses on the client. The worker focuses on the obligation. The owner focuses on the opportunity. Achieving the Blended Life 01/24/2012
Are you focussed on trying to balance work and your personal life? Do you find it a struggle to balance the time you have at home versus the time spent at the office? Do you feel guilty when things get out of balance, like most of the time? It's time to concede defeat; not in life, but with the idea that we can truly achieve balance. Instead, shoot for a blended life. Look for ways to increase your flexibility so that your work life starts to blend with your personal life. How? How to Blog in Half the Time 01/13/2012
One of the biggest excuses for not blogging more often is lack of time. Wouldn't it be great if we could create a blog post in minutes? How about seconds? It can be done, if you know what you're trying to accomplish and you have a template or a formula to follow. Here's an example of what I have often done to create a post in five minutes or less.
