Two Keys to Personal Renewal

It was the day after the terrorist attacks that many Americans stopped to decide what's really important. It was a day when people looked at their own lives with deep reflection and wondered what more they could do or give back to society.

Some did more than think. They quit their jobs, went back to school and changed careers. Others volunteered or became active in their church or spent more time at home.

As important as it is to remember September 11th, it is also highly valuable to remember September 12th. It's never too late to ponder your life's purpose and direction. Here are two ideas for personal renewal.

1. Consider what you're for. In pondering your life over the next three to five years, what would you like to accomplish? What energizes you? Use that positive emotion to motivate you.

2. Consider what you're against. What would you like to stop? What bothers you? What troubles you? Use that negative emotion to drive you to action.

We can have an impact, for or against something. But we need to start. September 12th helps us do just that.

It is important to remember Sept. 11th.

And I like your spin on remembering Sept. 12th.

Perhaps I should also remember Sept. 10th? That day, thousands presumed upon a "tomorrow" that never materialized. Is there merit in living and ordering my affairs as if today could be my Sept. 10th? That might adjust my priorities a bit, and indeed my "Sept. 11th" will come one of these days, and perhaps just as unexpected.

Excellent point. How different life was on September 10th. We are never promised tomorrow. Make today count.
