Author and speaker John Maxwell says we all suffer from 3 delusions, that we are...
We need to be honest with our ourselves - talk straight with ourselves - and determine to be better in
the coming year than we are today. How to do that?
- a good driver
- funny, or have a good sense of humor
- good listeners

Determine what you need to work on; that's probably the toughest part since we are reluctant to admit our shortcomings. When I was in broadcasting, we used to listen to air checks, or recordings of our newscasts and try to look for ways to improve our delivery -- our voice, our inflection, our pronunciation and so forth. That's not an easy process because you need to be humble enough to hear your mistakes, and most broadcasters are not very humble.
Determine what you will need to do to get better (read a book, get some coaching, go back to school, pay attention, etc).
Begin to carry out in small steps the process of improvement. This could be on a daily or weekly basis; it could involve some way of tracking your progress, or it might even involve a colleague or friend to give you valuable feedback.
Learn to admit where you need to improve and begin to work on just one area today.
