Attending a concert last night, I was struck by how often the audience applauded, sometimes at the wrong moments (when the selection had yet to conclude). We are quick to applaud performances and we cheer at sporting events. But you don't have to be a musician or an athlete to appreciate applause.
It's a shame, really, that there's not a better way to let people who perform everyday tasks know that we appreciate them or what they've done. About the closest we get to it is tipping at a restaurant. Each one of us goes through most of our day with no instant recognition. So, what's the solution?

Look for it in other ways. Your accomplishment, the finished product, is part of your applause. Helping someone else complete a successful project is part of your applause. Knowing you provided real value to a customer is part of your applause.
Likewise, never forget the missing applause in your life is missing for just about everyone else. Be someone who verbalizes your appreciation. The surprised looks and smiles you get will be your applause in return.
