The secret to effective goals is in their ability to arouse one's passion, motivation and ambition. In other words, the amount of desire one has to accomplish the goal. If you're not sold on the goal, why bother?
In order for that to happen, a goal must be personal. Any goal has to be something near and dear to you. It can't be someone else's goal or what someone suggests should be your goal. A personal goal insures that you will own it and invest the time, money and the commitment it will take to accomplish it.

Second, a goal must be provocative. A goal should generate enough interest and excitement that will carry you through when the going gets tough and you're tempted to give up. The fight to keep battling through all of the roadblocks and setbacks will be largely the result of how much you really want to see the end result. So, if a goal doesn't get you jazzed, it may not be worth pursuing.
Third, any goal must be possible. More goals have been tossed aside in the early stages simply because they seemed far too difficult, if not impossible, to accomplish. When something seems so out of reach, it's easy to throw in the towel. That's not to say a goal should be so simple it requires virtually no effort. Effective goals always stretch us, but must always be within reason.
So, as you begin this new year, see if your goals meet the criteria of being personal, provocative and possible. Then, begin.
