I used to have a running dialogue with a colleague at my radio newsroom about how to approach gathering and reporting the news. He was a firm believer in reacting to the news, making sure we were on top of any events that unfolded or had already become big stories.
I agreed there was a need for that, but I also believed we needed to be pro-active in our coverage. By that, I meant that we should be forward thinking, checking ahead on what was likely to occur at next week's city council meeting or legislative hearing. By looking ahead, you're more likely the one to report the story nobody else has.
How much of your day is spent merely reacting to events and circumstances and how much of it is looking ahead and being pro-active?
