
I heard someone the other day say that he was a firm believer in not trying to start something new from scratch, that if someone else had already done it, just copy or borrow the idea.
I found myself nodding in agreement, and thought of one of my earlier posts. In fact, one of the key benefits of social media is the quick access we all have to other people's thoughts, vision and practices.
Having said that, you really need to go beyond borrowing or copying an existing idea. You should strive to do three things:

Having said that, you really need to go beyond borrowing or copying an existing idea. You should strive to do three things:
1. Adapt it to fit your specific need or situation. Very few ideas can be reused in the same state you found them.
2. Improve it. Make it better, cheaper, faster, etc.
3. Expand or enlarge the idea. Take it to a new level.
After all, if all we did were to polish existing ideas, we'd still be listening to vinyl records or cassette tapes. Someone figured out digital audio and a whole new world emerged.
