4 Questions to Consider

As a former reporter and news director at WGN Radio in Chicago, I knew that one of the keys in the news business is to have news that is timely, informative and relevant. Even a mundane local government story can be written in such a way to give the reader or listener a sense of why the story is important to them.

Relevance means that it matters, that people care. Relevance also means that it hits people where they live. Pocketbook issues are some of the best examples of this.

Teamwork. Wow, was it ever on display in the Dallas Mavericks' NBA championship victory over the Miami Heat. It's clear from how the Mavs outplayed the Heat that teamwork trumps talent.

The Mavs played great defense while also managing to score on offense with a multi-pronged strategy. Yes, Dirk Nowitzki, the series MVP, was the go-to guy, but the rest of the team followed up with key shots at opportune moments.

While the Heat also played well in spurts, and while they clearly had an all-star cast that included LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh, they could not overcome the relentless team approach of Dallas.

"No man is an Island." We've all heard that quote from John Donne, and yet have a tendency to resist the truth of the statement.

We buy into the myth we can do it all on our own. We don't need a helping hand, or so we think. The reality is that you and I can benefit from collaboration more than we might imagine.

I saw this first hand the other day.
